We’ve delved into Greenwood Place with Kier Group to discover how the use of our Vista balustrade system has helped create a unique project vision.

Greenwood Place is Camden’s first Centre for Independent Living (CIL), led by disabled people, for disabled people through a consortium of Camden voluntary sector disability organisations led by Camden Disability Action.

As a multi-functional space offering training and employment, a place for social enterprises to grow and areas to support people living in the community to maintain and develop their own independence; a balustrade system offering flexibility and accessibility was key.

With a need for unobstructed views to aid therapy, rehabilitation and sense of mind, the Vista system was the obvious choice.

The use of structural glass enabled PKCO Architects to preserve views across London to landmarks and maintain a sense of openness within the internal voids by using over-height glass panels with no intermediate posts.

It was a challenge to review all the architect’s detail and setting out drawings, in order to identify all the variations of the proposed fixing detail, for each area of balustrade.

Queries regarding glass fixings at different heights through the different variations of the façade build-ups were managed through close collaboration with PKCO Architects and Kier Group, to ensure the correct fixing and setting out was specified for each area.

A first fix option was required to install the fixing studs to the concrete parapet upstands prior to insulation and render finish being applied, and before the parapet capping’s were completed.

This required detailed setting out of each fixing position at an early stage of the project to facilitate the construction sequence.

The ability to move freely and easily around the building was high priority; maximising the space with the use of handrails around the outside of the rooms allowed for improved accessibility for Greenwood Place users.
